Coco the Felted Feline by nikkiburr Coco the Felted Feline by nikkiburr
Good grief this one took long enough. I've been long overdue (we're talking years here) for making a decent piece of artwork for my dad and for Christmas I promised him a felted something was coming his way in the near future. This is that something :)

The cat herself is Coco, my family's cat who we got as a kitten when I was in 2rd grade. Coco passed away recently and as my dad especially had a fondness for her, I felt it was an appropriate gift.

I'm not 100% happy with it...there are little things that are anatomically off and they glare at me horribly, little things that are slightly the wrong size or the wrong shape. But honestly I could probably sit and work on this thing forever and never be totally satisfied with it, so I decided to call it done for now.

I couldn't tell you where every bit of fiber in her comes from...but I know there's alpaca, sheep and llama all involved somehow. She's felted pretty densely so is quite solid.

Oh and also I finally put in the effort to time myself on this one: 45.63 hours. Yeesh.

I am stunned. And I have to ask, so this starts with loose fibers (wool etc.) and you can turn it into a very detailed form? Especially the eyes, woah! How is it possible to pinpoint fibers down, so they have such sharp edges. Really amazing craft!

I am beyond amazed at the amount of detail/realism here, and i totally believe the number of hours put into her! I felted a tiny manatee (not even 2 inches), and it look almost 4 hours!

How are you so good at this?? Even with the slight anatomical errors here and there or whatever, you still managed to get so much right and that gaze!! :O Honestly, I (like many others) initially thought this was a real cat from the thumbnail. Your felted critters are pure enjoyment.

This is simply amazing - I thought it was a photograph of a real cat!

What did you use for the eyes and paw pads? The lines are so clean - are they fiber as well?

Yep, everything is fiber all the way through. The eyes and pads are both sheep wool while the body itself is llama and some unknown fiber mill leftovers for the core. Thank you!

As a fellow needlefelter, I salute you with all due enthusiasm and respect. This is an absolutely amazing piece. As an artist, I'm sure you'll always see something you don't like or that you feel like you could "fix" or this or that. However, from the bystander's perspective (and in your case even if the bystander is a fellow in the craft), this is absolutely impressive.

This is beyond amazing! I thought for sure that it was a photo of a live animal! The detail in your itty bitty felt animals is just astounding! I took a look at the other pictures you have of her and I was impressed to see that you even included her paw pads! The eyes are just mesmerizing and were what mostly made me think it was a real cat when I clicked on the thumbnail. Do you take commissions? Not that I have money right now. :(

Surely you could do better than that!

Naw, just kidding.

This needle felting skill you've developed is very impressive, though I honestly can say I have not seen that many to be an accurate judge of such craftsmanship. However, take the praise for what is worth, even if it may be an awe-stricken gaze from a simpleton like me.

Many artists usually identify parts about a piece of work he/she has made to have something lacking, or have some aspect that could be further refined. But I hope that does not stop you from continuing to create, and of course making "executive decisions" that allow you to move forward. ^_^

As for a critique, from what I have seen on the site link you provided, your felt equivalent to Coco is a fairly good representation of her character (well, not that I have had any direct contact with Coco, since cats seem to just sit there and stare...). The feline anatomy escapes me, so if you were going for precision, then I could see how Coco is a little more rotund than the way you portrayed her. Other than that, you masterfully captured her piercing stare and characteristic fur patterns.

And I have to say, what makes any work of art special is that it was made with a purpose. I am happy that you made this sweet girl into a physical memory that embodies the fondness your dad had for Coco. My condolences to your father.

You are guaranteed an appreciated viewer for portraying art in its most basic appeal: conveying emotion. Keep up the great work and I hope to see more from you!

Haha thanks for the comment :) I do appreciate it. I had a hard time because I didn't have any ref pictures of her in the pose I wanted to put her in... but the reason I made her less 'round' is because she really was a super lanky tiny, tiny cat. Her fur got thick sometimes and made her look larger than she was, but I made her look a little more like she does in the summer I think.

But yeah, the anatomy is no where near perfect and every time I look at it my brain starts ticking off things that need to be tweaked to make it better, but I really think I need to just leave it for now and go on to do other things. Being too much of a perfectionist is a little problematic sometimes. *sigh*

Thanks again for taking the time to write such a nice comment!

Ah, well that is usually the artists in all of us... although the perfectionism sure is not helping you much in the production department, is it? ^_^

But, I am glad to hear Coco was well taken care for and loved. Pets these days who have neglectful owners often see problems associated with being overweight. Kudos to your family (which is more than I can say about your trials in anatomy ^_^;)

Happy to help and peace of mind be with you!
